Some of fellow wedding Celebrants have been strong advocates for the changes going through parliament presently.
The biggest misconception I have heard recently is that humanist celebrants will be able to conduct ‘legal’ ceremonies soon, and independent celebrants won’t. The truth is this. At present the legal bit still needs to be conducted by a registrar or member of the clergy.
An act is going through parliament, very slowly, that will enable ALL celebrants to perform ceremonies at licensed venues legally. Which is fantastic news for all couples, of any faith, creed or gender for this means we, the independent celebrants can give you all you want and more.
The Celebrants - and I think I speak for both independent and humanists here - will provide a more personal service, tailoring the ceremony to exactly how you would like it, when you would like it where you would like it.
And, from personal experience the day holds so much more value when it is bespoke. It’ll be special regardless – it’s your wedding day after all!!
So, my advice on this is as follows.
1. Do your research. Understand the difference in what is offered and by whom. It’s something of a paradox but don’t trust what anyone tells you on face value – get some background to be able to double check the facts. (I say this because there are a lot of people out there in it for the buck, rather than the couples)
2. Once you have chosen an independent celebrant then have a good idea of what you would like from your service. Yes, we can guide you, but we shouldn’t influence you. This is your special day. It is our job to make it happen.
3. Follow your dreams, for with a modern celebrant you will be able to design, create and achieve the wedding of your dreams.
4. Relax, take in the journey and enjoy your special day!
